I've fixed this for myself by adding this setting:

"workbench.colorCustomizations": {
    "[Ariake Dark]": {
      "editor.selectionBackground": "#ffffff21"
    }
  }

This results in the following:

Still not very readable, but better. Does anyone have better suggestions for which colors to use? :)
