if i kill the driver after i invoked it the keyboard becomes inoperable until i either fire up the driver again or restart the machine (at which point the kernel-provided driver takes over?)
would it be possible to have a "graceful shutdown" where the macro keys will cease to function but the basic keyboard functionality will remain ?

This doesn't happen for me, when I kill the driver the keyboard keeps pressing return until i press something else, but it works fine otherwise. Linux Mint 16
