Improved error handling

I have made major changes to the app in hopes of improving error handling and reporting. Of course, I may have introduced errors in the process so be sure to let me know of any problems you encounter.

I changed the page rendering process so that an error in one component doesn't prevent rendering of other components. I think this might have been the cause of the error Sophie experienced with the File->Export not working.
