A history of version-control tools, and how they've changed open-source culture
Talk Description
Version-control tools like Git have become part of every software developer's toolchain, almost as essential as compilers or text editors. Their affordances affect how we do our work, how we communicate, and how we organise our communities. Every new generation of version-control system has led to big changes in how the open-source community operates. I'll talk about some of these changes - some of which I've seen first-hand, and others I've learned about through interacting with legacy systems - and talk about what might be coming if (when?) Git is dethroned.
