We need to test and optimize the new UI for smart TVs running Android TV or Fire TV.

  • The default UI should adjust its layout for bigger screens, possibly moving some controls around.
  • All UI components should be navigable using a TV remote. Ideally, users don't have to change their custom UIs for this to work.

Jetpack Compose has an androidx.tv library which might be of interest.

Some controls are reacheable on Android TV, but it's practically unusable via remote

The issues I bumped into just for record:

  • after UI disappears during playback it's not possible to navigate back to UI controls using remote
  • not possible to seek using remote

androidx.tv:tv-material finally has a stable 1.0.0 release, so maybe we can actually start building this?
