Resolution is not easy to do well without proper study of the exact math needed for great looking art and getting the amount of ratios of sprites to screen where it feels super great and worth playing.
Here are some examples I've been using to hone in and make more clear just how much resolution is needed for realistic art while still keeping 2D hand draw production feasible. While also offering enough resolution for faces and human elements to really shine in 2D and 3D art. There is a graphics resolution I call 'HD 2.3D' that is 1920 x 1080 Pixels using 2D and 3D art that is 2.5D art but in line where ~2/3rds of the art is 2D and ~1/3rd is 3D; thus 1920 x 1080 Pixels 'HD2.3D' (2D+3D). https://github.com/WithinAmnesia/Art/tree/main/Sprites/2D%20Sprites/Realistic
I have been studying 2D/2.5D/3D A.R.P.G.s and R.P.G.s and R.T.S. resolutions and character and building dimensions ratios vs. screen resolutions and sprite to screen size ratios
Character Sprite Dimensions to Screen Resolution:
Baldur's Gate 1998:
Age of Empires II: Age of Kings:
Ages of Empires: Rise of Rome:
1920 x 1080 Pixels 'HD2.3D' (2D+3D):
2D Realistic Character Sprite Sizes (854x480p)
Baldur's Gate 640x480p, 1280x720p, 1280x960p Resolutions Study Examples:
Baldur's Gate Tales of the Sword Coast Is Effectively 640 x 480 Pixels (Native Resolution) x 2 = ~1280 x 960 Pixels (CRT Resolution) with Effectively ~64 x 128 Pixels Character Sprites
Baldur's_Gate_33(1280x960p)(Bicubic)(4;3_Aspect_Ratio)
Baldur's_Gate_33(1280x960p) Nearest_Neighbour (4;3_Aspect_Ratio)
Baldur's_Gate_33(1280x960p) Bicubic(Smoothed) (4;3_Aspect_Ratio)
Baldur's_Gate_33(1280x720p) Bicubic (Stretched)
Baldur's_Gate_33(1280x720p) Nearest_Neighbour (Stretched)
Baldur's_Gate_33(1280x720p) Bicubic(Smooth) (Stretched)
Baldur's_Gate_33(640x480p)
Age of Empires:
CRT vs LCD (CRT effectively x 2 resolution such as 240p -> 480p, 480p -> 960p etc.)
