I have had both the applications running for two days, and both the apps recorded the steps equally, that is 4120 steps today and 21439 steps the day before, when I performed a system reboot the progress for the day reset back to 0, then again, I walked a few hundred steps before rebooting system, yet it happened again, the progress got set to 0 for the day.

Could this have something to do with the setting Background Counter Return Frequency? The default is one hour, meaning that it takes up to an hour for your steps to be permanently remembered. If you force stop the app or reboot before that, you lose them. It's unclear to me why this is so, I've asked about it here but nobody has replied with an explanation so far.
Try changing it to No delays allowed and see if that solves the issue.
