Hi @Openscapes/2023-swrcb-cohort ,

Thanks for a great fifth session last Wednesday. A huge thanks to all of the teams for contributing to conversations and commitment to trying new things throughout this Openscapes process. We loved hearing about your Pathways last week and are looking forward to continued conversations and momentum around how the SWRCB community can do better science in less time - for future you, your teams, and your collaborators!

A few things to wrap up:

  1. Openscapes survey - If you did not have a chance to complete the survey last Wednesday please provide your feedback here! Openscapes improves with each cohort based on your feedback.
  2. Want to be a mentor in 2024? - We want to grow Openscapes at the Water Boards - we want to reach more teams and share what we’re learning with more folks, but we need help to grow! Please contact Anna, Devan, or Tina via email or teams chat if you’re interested in the Openscapes Mentor role for the 2024 cohort.
  3. Openscapes Champions Cohort 2-month Follow-Up will take place Monday, December 4th, 10am - 11am (In-person location tbd)

We are so grateful for your thoughtful engagement and impressed with your progress and Pathways. We hope you continue to iterate your Seaside Chats (or whatever other skills or tools you picked up) with your teams!

Please don’t forget to keep in touch, ask for help, and share successes and celebrations on our shared 2023 Water Boards Openscapes Teams Channel!

Cheers,
Anna, Devan and Tina

Goals: Each team shared their pathway and we discussed how to keep momentum going forward.

Themes that came across through the final pathways shares:

  • Lots of interest in developing consistent documentation strategies (document how we document!) and establishing a common way to share data and information from program to program.

  • The importance of creating a culture where team members' diversity and knowledge can be celebrated, and normalizing imperfection and iteration.

  • Lots of actions and next steps, including increasing or refining use of GitHub (or other collaboration tools) in workflows and building user guides, and continuing to revisit the pathway document with future us in mind.

  • Many teams expressed the importance of developing better habits for communicating and collaboration (i.e. establishing routine Seaside chats, co-working sessions, or specialized working groups).

Resources:

  • PathwayShare Folder - if you’re open to sharing your Pathway with the rest of the cohort - upload it here!
  • “Graduation gift” - Openscapes badges by Allison Horst!

A few lines from shared notes in the Agenda doc:

  • Create Space to be imperfect!
  • Value of collaboration!
  • Keeping our audience in mind – who wants the information and in what format is helpful to the audience
  • Realizing how equally important how reproducibility, collaboration, communication, culture
  • To put our Pathways into action, we need…
    • Regularly scheduled short check-ins to make sure we’re on the right track. +1
    • Time and opportunities to interact with different programs and collaborate. +1 +1 +1+1 +3
    • Support, resources, and time +1+1
