puzzlepaint reported on Sourceforge [tickets:#126]:

A template action should exist to open map templates in another Mapper window to edit them. Maybe it would even be possible to edit them in the same window, for example to make corrections to a map while a course setting file using the map is open.

If the map is edited in another window, saving it should synchronize the changes over to all other windows where it is used as template.

Do you remember my question whether to merge MapLayers (now MapParts) and Templates? It might be difficult to draw a clear line between complex templates and map parts.

puzzlepaint posted on Sourceforge:

The differences so far are:

Map templates:

  • are separate files
  • are drawn either behind or in front of the main map

Map parts:

  • are all in the main map file
  • graphically merge with the other parts

As written before, if these differences turn out to be insignificant, I would agree to drop one of them (the map parts).

  • With regard to WMS (or OSM), map templates are not always files, cf. WMS (Web map service) support #84.
  • I can imagine embedding templates in the map for convenience.
  • I can imagine having [some] templates drawn before other people's map parts but behind my personal map part.

Map templates are supported. However, there is no convenient way to switch to edting such a template.
