Many artifacts will contain pom files describing their original build state, and it may be worth bringing some or all of that information in. The trouble would be if the embedded poms contain dependencies that either needn't or can't be resolved, and the artifact ID will likely be a mismatch for non-Eclipse projects, so it's questionable whether it's truly a good idea.
