I think they should return the experience that you usually get when you recover your items (7 levels or so)

(currently they dont give any and xp is dropped normally)

This is true:

When the player dies, they drop experience orbs worth 7 * current level experience points, up to a maximum of 100 points (enough to reach level 7). All the other experience vanishes.

But, also in vanilla, the gamerule keepInventory persists your experience. Overall, I think a config option could be a good idea. Other mods, such as Death Bags, even have a craftable item to provide the functionality.
