Sensors can use the external power, but (if I2C) be pulled up to 3V3 from the internal power.
Note also:
This might not be a problem having 2 in the same chip (like what Chad has found) -- certainly within I2C tolerance even if both sides don't use the same 3V3 regulator (I'm guessing they tap into the same one)
We already have a reel of these chips...
Tentative conclusion:
Keep separate, do nothing; hold the status quo because no real gains or losses.
