Revisit metadata handling

The metadata handling should be revisiting specifically to eliminate excessive number of arguments in constructors and investigate use of json schema to perform validation.

#83 provides the basis for rigorous validation with the addition of msgspec, though the excessive constructor arguments is still applicable. Might make sense to split these things off into a separate package
