There’s a lot of over-plotting in the map, particularly in the eastern US. It obscures the map borders and makes it difficult to orient yourself. Additionally, displaying all observations over CONUS makes it hard to read anything meaningful from the map.
Solution
There are a number of things we could do to address these problems:
Draw the map borders over the data points so they're not obscured
Plot contours instead of individual observations
Group nearby observations if they are close enough on-screen
Part of this might involve calculating the density of observations on-screen and if they are too close together, grouping them, or switching to an aggregate display (like a contour plot).
