Help with unsafe operations

The library is at a point where optimizing is going to have to go into unsafe territory.
None of the current maintainers have much experience in this topic, so if you have any suggestions, please share.

Let's first have a discussion on what's possible and what's smart before creating issues for optimizing.

I guess if we go this route, this library may help us along too: https://github.com/Sergio0694/PolySharp
It has the SkipLocalsInit polyfil and some others. As a bonus, it would also allow for removing our custom polyfils.
