This is perhaps a bit of a controversial suggestion. Allow the GM to fudge dice.
Sometimes, you just need to fudge a roll. Not encouraging it, but every table plays their own game, and there are moments when story is bigger than combat to the letter.
There are fudge modules for generic rolls, but they don't seem to integrate well with RSR.
I have a branch in my fork that allows me to fudge a roll (right now only item attack rolls, that's all I needed) by asking for both advantage and disadvantage as the GM.
