Many objects with pure virtual functions have pybind11 python bindings that allow pure python subclasses to be made.
We want to provide support for serializing and deserializing these objects through the C++ interface.
This could in principle be accomplished through pickle, but some of the implementation details are not clear.
We want this in particular to support user defined pure-python cross section classes.
