While the menu can and should toggle the view panel, it might be nice to have a straight forward (x) in the upper right corner to close it out (untoggle it).

we have jQuery toggleClass() in some unpushed code, possibly also a session variable?

this needs to get pushed but it'll be fairly easy to hook up an x button to the existing functionality to hide/show the panel.
