I've tried to install fedora-minimal-conflicts-cockpit but it seems to Conflicts not just cockpit, but storaged as well. The storaged is provided by udisks2-2.9.3-1.fc35.x86_64 on Fedora 35, and removing it takes the following bits with it:

# dnf remove storaged
Dependencies resolved.

Could fedora-minimal-conflicts-cockpit be relaxed to only aim at cockpit?

Actually, fedora-minimal-conflicts-anaconda seems to cause the same, via libudisks2.

My initial reaction is that your interests might be best served by removing udisks2 anyway.

I would be interested to learn what exact functionality of XFCE depends on udisks2.

Would you be willing to test your environment without the udisks2 package

systemctl stop udisks2.service

It may be that some advanced disk operations in thunar will stop working. 🤷‍♂️

Right. With udisks2.service stopped, attaching an external disk via USB lists is in dmesg as

[39885.955016] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI disk

but the disk does not appear in Thunar to get mounted. So the desktop experience gets affected.

Before I seriously revisit issue later. Let me just put this out: I always mount my USB in command line. 🤷‍♂️

Well, you are the old-timer. Us young generation we just want to do pointy-clicky. :-P
