As far as the API goes, you might add
byte * bitmapAlloc(int sizeInBits); void bitmapFree(byte * bitmap); so the client doesn't have to worry about how many bytes to allocate.
And/or provide a macro to help with allocations. A macro instead of a function if you want it to appear in array allocations.
