ChimeraOS

  • Uses an A/B atomic update system for stable updates.
  • Works on almost any PC and has specific support for many handhelds.
  • All ChimeraOS code is available in our GitHub repositories.
  • Includes many pre-installed emulators.
  • Includes the Chimera web app and tools for:
    • remotely installing software without needing to resort to using desktop mode
    • automatically applying game tweaks
    • automatically downloading missing artwork for Steam games
  • Uses Gnome for desktop mode.
  • All ChimeraOS infrastructure is automated and hosted on GitHub making it trivial to fork, build and install a custom version of ChimeraOS.
  • Monthly releases that always use the latest vanilla Arch Linux packages.

SteamOS 3.x

  • Uses an A/B atomic update system for stable updates (just differs in the underlying implementation).
  • Currently only works on the Steam Deck.
  • Many components are hosted only on internal Valve repositories.
  • No pre-installed emulators.
  • No Chimera app or similar functionality.
  • Uses KDE Plasma for desktop mode.
  • Requires additional infrastructure and your own build system if you decide to fork.
  • Often includes stale software with many patches to base Arch Linux packages.
