not sure why I'm having this problem, I have tried using beatsage directly before and had no problem uploading it to BMBF. Yet after zipping it, it appears "isn't a known type".

I don't personally have a quest device, neither have I used BMBF myself, but I'll see if I can help.
From what I've read of BMBF, it appears that it only accepts the songs in a zip without a folder and by the sounds of it you are uploading a zip with the data inside a folder.
My suggestion is to either disable 'automatic extraction' in the application settings so that they remain in a zip, or you use something like winrar or 7zip to create zips of the files without folders, only including the song content.
