Yesterday I upgraded my RE1 CPU to an Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5800 3.20 GHz thanks to the instructions that were posted by a user on Arcade-Projects a few years ago. I believe the user is no longer a member there so I won't post their name in case they don't want to be mentioned. I used a TL866 and a SOIC8 to DIP8 adapter to program the BIOS.
Original instructions:
You can not upgrade CPU without patching BIOS.
RingEdge BIOS only supports E2160 CPU.
I have a custom BIOS for RingEdge, for change the CPU from an E2160 that runs at 1.8GHZ with an E5800 that has 2Mbytes of Cache and runs at 3.20Ghz.
I use that custom BIOS, mostly for run Grid and SR3 on RingEdge.
About BIOS
First you need to know that there 2 types of RingEdge motherboards and each one has different BIOS.
Older ones are mostly labeled by AALG and the BIOS chip is there soldered and newer one are labeled as AALE and normally the BIOS chip is there on a SOIC8 pins socket.
Well, the thing is that i'm doing custom BIOS for each RingEdge in order to maintain his Serial Number and specially his MAC.
For do that i need a dump of your BIOS chip or that you ship the motherboard to me.
But in your case, to ship motherboard two ways between USA and Europe, plus customs, etc, will be overkilling.
If you don't care about lossing serial number or MAC adress on the RingEdge, you can use one of my premade Custom Bios.
Here is a Custom Version BIOS for E5800 Processor, will work also with E5700 processor.
That one will convert your RingEdge into AALE-01D2799 and MAC adress: 00-D0-F1-15-42-9D
For program the BIOS chip you need to have access to an e2prom programer and have a RingEdge board with a socketed BIOS.
Is labeled on the motherboar as BIOS_SKT1, there is not confusion.
That BIOS is only usable on newer RingEdge motherboards AALE, are the ones with socketed BIOS and Motherboard Model 838-15014-01
Well i'm using also another way that is booting with a custom Linux SSD and flashing it with the Flashrom tool, but you will not be able to do that because RingEdge booting is protected by ATA password and i don't want to disclose any info about that, at least for now.
