Features overview

AdGuard VPN Browser Extension is available for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge. The UI and functionality doesn't differ between browsers so the overview below will be relevant for AdGuard VPN extensions for all browsers.

note

You can only use AdGuard VPN Browser Extension when logged in. Sign in with your AdGuard account or via Google, Facebook, or Apple. In the latter case make sure that your account is bound to the same email address as your AdGuard account. If you have an AdGuard VPN subscription, it will be activated automatically in AdGuard VPN Browser extension. Don’t have an AdGuard account yet? Create it here.

To manage your AdGuard VPN Browser Extension:

  • Either click its icon on the browser's panel, click the hamburger menu icon, and select Settings,
  • Or go to the Manage extensions page in your browser, click Details below AdGuard VPN and manage its settings from there.

Once done, you'll see several tabs on the left:

Settings

A few important settings are gathered inside this tab. Here you can choose a DNS server to use, add or remove the AdGuard VPN icon from the browser’s context menu, block WebRTC, change the extension's theme, and allow AdGuard to gather anonymous crash reports and technical data.

Choosing a DNS server

By default, the system DNS server provided by your ISP is selected, but it may compromise your privacy. With AdGuard VPN Browser extension, you can select a DNS server that provides better speed and security, and even blocks ads or potentially dangerous domains. Brief descriptions under the names of DNS servers will help you navigate and make your decision.

Learn more about DNS servers from various providers.

Exclusions

The next tab contains one of the main distinctive features of AdGuard VPN — two modes with separate exclusion lists.

In General mode, AdGuard VPN by default works on all websites, with the exception of the websites you've added to the exclusions list. In Selective mode, vice versa, AdGuard VPN by default doesn't work anywhere. You can add any websites where you'd like it to work to an exclusions list, separate from the one you saw in the General mode.

When adding a website to the exclusions list, you can enter the website manually or select the From the list option. In the latter case, you'll see eight categories (e.g. Shopping, Messengers, etc.), each suggesting several popular services. You can exclude any of those services in one click, and this action will add to exclusions all domains relevant to that specific service.

Import and export

Not only can you add and remove websites, you can also transfer ready exclusions lists to other devices where AdGuard VPN is installed. To export your exclusions list, follow the 4-step instruction below:

  1. Open AdGuard VPN Browser extension from where you want to export your lists of exclusions. Find the appropriate section and click the "Export" button. The exclusions.zip archive will be downloaded.
  2. There are two .txt files inside the archive, one for each of the General and Selective lists. Add more exclusions to them, delete the existing ones, rename files, or just leave the archive as it is.
  3. When transferring between different devices, send the .zip file to the device for import.
  4. Open AdGuard VPN on that device. Find the appropriate section, click the "Import" button and select the archive. Done!

Account

The third tab of AdGuard VPN Browser extension is utterly minimalistic, containing only the email address you used to sign into your account and two buttons, Manage and Sign out. Clicking the Manage button takes you to your personal AdGuard account, where you can see all your current licenses and subscriptions, as well as devices connected to them.

Support

You can find answers to common questions in the FAQ section, or leave feedback: report a bug if something isn't working as it should, suggest adding a new feature, or discuss AdGuard on any of the many social media platforms.

About

Another minor tab, where you can check the extension's version, visit the official website, and view the EULA or Privacy policy.

Features overview

What is AdGuard VPN for Android?

A VPN is an ideal tool that provides security and anonymity each time you browse the Internet. How does it work? Without going into technical details, we can say that VPN creates a secure encrypted connection (called a tunnel) between a user's device and a remote VPN server. In this way, data confidentiality is preserved, as well as the anonymity of the user, because a third-party observer sees the IP address of the VPN server and not the actual user's IP.

VPN is frequently used for:

  • Keeping personal data safe even while using public Wi-Fi
  • Preventing online activity tracking by masking the IP address
  • Hiding the real geolocation to remain anonymous

AdGuard VPN for Android can do it all for you — and even offer something unique. To find out why AdGuard VPN is the better option — read this article.

How to start using AdGuard VPN for Android

Firstly, download AdGuard VPN from Google Play and log into your AdGuard account. In case you don’t have it — you should create it. You can sign in directly with your AdGuard account credentials. Or do it via Google or Facebook, if your AdGuard account was registered using the same email address.

Main screen

The main screen reflects the VPN status (Connected/Disconnected). There are also the Connect/Disconnect button and a list of available servers.

Each server has its location and its ping rate, describing the response time of the server. The lower this rate, the faster the connection. The fastest servers always appear at the top of the list that consists of more than 50 locations in dozens of countries. You can connect to the fastest server by tapping the Connect button or by picking a location.

Exclusions

We've done everything to make it easy for you to manage your site and app exclusion lists. AdGuard VPN will only work where you choose.

Lists of exclusions

Exclusion lists allow you to manage the VPN connection for specific websites and apps. To access Exclusions, tap the second icon from the left at the bottom of the screen. To reach the Exclusions section, tap the second icon from the left at the bottom of the screen.

By default, AdGuard VPN works for all websites and apps except those added to exclusions, but you can easily switch to the other mode.

For websites

You can add domains (e.g. google.com) or subdomains (e.g. *.google.com) of websites to the Exclusions in three ways: enter them manually in the app, or right from the browser by clicking the Share button and selecting AdGuard VPN in the opened list below, or from built-in lists of services divided by categories.

Exclusions

note

There are some nuances in manual adding domains. For example, if you manually exclude the domain yahoo.com, all *.yahoo.com subdomains will also be listed in exclusions. However, domain names with other top-level domains, such as yahoo.jp or yahoo.fr, will not be excluded. Or you can add youtube.com to the exclusions, but the domain of the same service youtu.be will not get into the list. In this case, it’s more safe to use built-in lists of services, because we put there all subdomains related to each platform.

As you can enable subdomains in service lists, we added boxes that reflect the status of each service — you can see them on the main screen of Exclusions to the left of each service name:

  • Fully enabled is indicated by a white check mark on a green background

  • Partially enabled (enabled subdomains without the main domain) is marked with a green square on a white background

  • Fully disabled is marked with a blank checkbox

Good news: you can always return to the default view of service lists in case you’ve deleted or disabled any domains from there.

Exclusions *mobile_border

Another useful feature is Import/Export exclusions. There are only four steps to reach the goal:

  1. Open AdGuard VPN on the device/in the browser from where you want to export your lists of exclusions. Find the appropriate section and click the Export button. The adguard_vpn_exclusions.zip archive will be downloaded.
  2. There are two .txt files inside the archive, one for each of the lists. Add more exclusions to them, delete the existing ones, rename files (but more on this later), or just leave the archive with files as is.
  3. When transferring between different devices, don't forget to send the .zip file to the device for import. For example, if you import exclusion lists from your Windows device to your Android, make sure to send the .zip file to your Android beforehand.
  4. Open AdGuard VPN on the device where you want to import the archive with the ready lists of exclusions. Find the appropriate section, click the Import button and select the archive.

Import/Export *mobile_border

For apps

As we mentioned above, not only websites can be easily added to the exclusions. Choose for which apps you need AdGuard VPN and for which you don't.

In Integrated mode, you can only manage apps through AdGuard Ad Blocker.

App exclusions *mobile_border

Settings

You can reach Settings by pressing the gear icon at the bottom right of the screen. The first section there is App Settings: configure AdGuard VPN for Android as you need by selecting different options there.

Apps settings *mobile_border

AdGuard VPN autostart

The slider switched to the right enables an AdGuard VPN autostart after the device's startup.

DNS servers

DNS servers translate websites' names into something browsers can understand, i.e. IP addresses. AdGuard VPN for Android offers a wide selection of DNS servers, each with special qualities. For example, AdGuard DNS removes ads and protects your device from tracking while AdGuard DNS Family Protection combines the functions of AdGuard DNS with Safe search and adult content blocking. There is also an option to add a custom DNS server.

Auto-protection

This feature enables AdGuard VPN automatically when your device connects to a cellular or Wi-Fi network.

Kill Switch

You can set up the Kill Switch function on your Android device by following simple instructions on the screen. Why would you do this? If for some reason your VPN connection suddenly drops while you are using a mobile network or public Wi-Fi, Kill Switch will automatically terminate the internet connection, keeping attackers away from seizing your information.

Note that if Kill Switch is on, Apps settings and Exclusions won’t work.

Theme

You can choose the system default, system dynamic, dark or light theme of the app.

System dynamic theme *mobile_border

Light theme *mobile_border

Dark theme *mobile_border

Advanced settings

In Advanced settings, you can find four sections.

Operating mode allows you to specify how your traffic is routed. There are three modes: VPN, SOCKS5, and Integrated mode. In the VPN mode, all traffic is routed through AdGuard VPN. In the SOCKS5 mode, AdGuard VPN runs a local proxy server that can be used by other apps for traffic routing. Integrated mode allows AdGuard VPN and AdGuard Ad Blocker to work together.

note

Some AdGuard VPN features are disabled in Integrated mode: DNS servers, Kill Switch, Auto-protection, and App exclusions. You can manage DNS protection and route apps through your AdGuard VPN proxy in the AdGuard Ad Blocker app.

The next two sections are Logging level and Diagnostic info. Concerning the first option, it is not recommended to enable the Extended or Extreme logging level unless requested by our support team. Diagnostic info, locally stored technical information about the device and connections (IP address, ID, ping, etc.), can be sent to us in case of any technical problems.

The last section of Advanced settings is Low-level settings. We urge you not to enter this section unless you are highly qualified or have been asked to do so by our support team. Here it is possible to enable TUN interface logging or IPv6 protocol on the VPN interface, choose a proxy server port or Internet protocol version that should be used.

Compatibility

The Enable IPv6 option is only available for networks that support IPv6.

Support

At the Support section you can leave feedback, report a bug, or export logs and system info for further submission to the helpdesk.

Apps on Android devices may not always run stably in the background for various reasons, which may differ depending on the device model. This is most often due to the Android OS optimization function, or so-called "battery save mode". In such cases, the system closes apps in order to reduce the load and free up RAM.

If AdGuard VPN is disabled on your device, your personal data will become vulnerable. To avoid such a problem, you need to open this link and follow the instructions for your device with one difference: wherever it is required, choose AdGuard VPN instead of AdGuard.

Compatibility of AdGuard VPN with Chromecast

The built-in Chromecast technology is incompatible with running a VPN because it uses the DLNA protocol which does not support VPN connections. This means that if a Chromecast device and a smartphone or tablet running a VPN are on the same Wi-Fi network, in most cases Chromecast won't be recognized by the mobile device.

Google has also blocked the ability to change the Chromecast's network settings by restricting access to its DNS settings. This also prevents Chromecast from working with a VPN.

You can solve the problem by setting up a VPN on a router. This will allow all devices connected to the router to use the VPN connection, including Chromecast. But remember: setting up a VPN on your router may require additional knowledge, so read the manufacturer's manual.

How to collect and send logs

If you encounter any problem while using AdGuard VPN for Android, you can inform us about it by sending the app logs.

Collecting and sending standard logs

By default, AdGuard VPN for Android uses the Default logging level, that is, the basic collection of data about running processes of the app. To send these logs, follow the next steps:

  1. Open AdGuard VPN for Android and, if possible, repeat the actions that led to the error. Note the exact time when this error occurred.

  2. Open Settings by clicking the gear icon at the lower right corner → SupportReport a bug.

  3. In the opened form, enter your email address for feedback and describe the error found, including the time when this error occurred. If you can't reproduce the problem, specify as accurately as possible when it last occurred.

  4. There is a check mark next to Send app logs and system info, which means that when you send a report, you also send logs.

If for some reason it is more convenient for you to send us logs in another way, you can export them yourself. To do this, go to SettingsSupportExport logs and system info.

Collecting and sending extended logs

In most cases, the Default logging level is sufficient to trace down possible bugs. But there are cases when more detailed technical information about the device and connections is required, and then our support team will ask you to enable the Extended or Extreme logging level. To send these types of logs, follow these steps:

  1. Open AdGuard VPN for Android and select Settings (the gear icon at the bottom right corner) → App settingsAdvanced settingsLogging level.

  2. In the Logging level section, select Extended or Extreme logging level.

  3. Repeat the actions that led to the error and note the time when it occurred.

  4. Switch the logging level back to Default.

  5. Then open Settings by tapping the gear icon at the lower right corner → SupportReport a bug.

  6. In the opened form, enter your email address for feedback and describe the error found, including the time when this error occurred.

  7. Make sure that there is a check mark next to Send app logs and system info and tap Send.

Problems with Restricted Mode profile

The owners of phones and tablets running the Android 7+ operating system might face the problem caused by using a profile with Restricted Mode. If you have such a profile, AdGuard VPN, like other applications that use VPN, gets restrictions on selective handling of VPN traffic. Also, one of the reasons for this problem may be using Dual App/Dual Messenger profile on your device. Below are described the recommendations that you can apply when this problem occurs.

Solutions

You have two ways to solve the issue:

Option 1: Grant permissions to AdGuard VPN using ADB

  1. Activate the developer mode and enable USB debugging:

    • Open the Settings application on your phone;
    • Go to System section (last item in the settings menu). In this section find sub-item About phone;
    • Click the Build number line 7 times. After that, you will receive a notification that You are now a developer (If necessary, enter an unlock code for the device);
    • Open System SettingsDeveloper Options → Scroll down and enable USB debugging → Confirm debugging is enabled in the window Allow USB debugging after reading the warning carefully.
    note

If you have any difficulties or additional questions, full instructions can be found here.

  2. Install and configure ADB;

    note

On the Windows platform, Samsung owners may need to install this utility.

  3. Connect your device using a USB cable to the computer or laptop on which you installed ADB;

  4. Open the command line on your PC:

    • Cmd.exe if you are using Windows;
    • Terminal if you are using macOS;
  5. Enter the command adb shell pm grant com.adguard.vpn android.permission.INTERACT_ACROSS_USERS and press Enter.

Option 2: Remove Restricted user account

You can find here how to manage user accounts from an Android device.

note

In some cases restricted user accounts are created implicitly and cannot be removed. For instance, when you use Dual Messenger or Dual App features on Samsung or LG devices. Read below how to fix the issue in these cases.

LG and Samsung devices

Owners of LG or Samsung phones may also encounter a similar issue. It can be caused by using Dual App/Dual Messenger function (which automatically creates a restricted profile). To solve this issue, you need to disable this feature.

Samsung

  • Open Settings;
  • Press Advanced;
  • Scroll down and then press Dual Messenger;
  • Disable the Dual Messenger for all apps;
  • Lock the device for 5 minutes;
  • Unlock the screen and try again to create the VPN profile.

LG

  • Open Settings;
  • Choose the General tab;
  • Scroll down and then press Dual App;
  • Remove all apps from the list;
  • Reboot your device.

Features overview

What is AdGuard VPN for iOS?

A VPN allows you to create a secure connection to another network on the Internet. It connects a user’s computer or mobile device to a server and allows one to browse the internet using a "cover" IP address. If the VPN server is located in another country, it will appear as if your Internet connection was established from this country. For more details, you can check our article on how a VPN works.

AdGuard VPN has several functions:

  • hides your real whereabouts and helps you stay anonymous
  • changes your IP address to protect your data from tracking
  • encrypts your traffic and makes contents inaccessible to scammers
  • lets you configure where to use VPN and where not to (exclusions feature)

The next advantage of AdGuard VPN for iOS is our own VPN protocol. It is extremely difficult to detect compared to other VPN protocols, and it is stable even with a poor Internet connection. Read more about the AdGuard VPN protocol.

How to use AdGuard VPN for iOS

To use AdGuard VPN for iOS, first you need to log into your AdGuard account. You can sign in directly with your AdGuard account credentials, or via Google, Apple ID, or Facebook (if your AdGuard account was registered using the same email address).

If you don’t have an AdGuard account yet, you will have to create it first.

Using AdGuard VPN is quite easy. On the main screen you can see the Connect (Disconnect) button and the list of available servers (we call them locations). Each server has its own location (a certain country and a city) and ping indicator.

The ping shows the server’s response time in milliseconds. This indicates how fast the VPN connection will be when you connect to that location. Selecting a server with a ping of 22 ms means that a data packet sent to this server will be returned in 22 ms.

With AdGuard VPN, you can choose from over 50 locations in dozens of countries.

Main screen and locations *mobile_border

Exclusions

You can find the Exclusions tab by tapping the second icon in the bottom bar. There you will see two exclusion lists, for Regular and Selective modes.

In Regular mode, the VPN works for all websites except the excluded ones. Conversely, in Selective mode, the VPN only works for websites from the list.

You can add domains (e.g. google.com) or subdomains (e.g. *.google.com) of websites to the lists in two ways:

  • Enter them manually in the app
  • Add them directly from the browser by sharing the desired pages with AdGuard VPN

Exclusions *mobile_border

Import/export exclusions

Another useful feature is the import and export of exclusion lists. This way you can share exclusion lists from and to other devices.

You can do it in four steps:

  1. Open AdGuard VPN on the device from where you want to export your lists of exclusions. Find the appropriate section and click the Export button. The exclusions.zip archive will be downloaded.

  2. There are two .txt files inside the archive, one for each of General and Selective lists. Add more exclusions to them, delete the existing ones, rename files (but more on this later), or just leave the archive with files as is.

  3. When transferring between different devices, don’t forget to send the .zip file to the device for import. For example, if you import exclusion lists from your iOS device to your Mac, make sure to send the .zip file to your Mac beforehand.

  4. Open AdGuard VPN on the device where you want to import the archive with the ready lists of exclusions. Find the appropriate section, click the Import button and select the archive.

In AdGuard VPN for iOS, the export and import features can be accessed by tapping the three-dot icon in the upper right corner of the Exclusions screen.

DNS server

AdGuard VPN for iOS offers a choice between several DNS servers, each with their own special qualities. For example, AdGuard DNS removes ads and protects your device from tracking while AdGuard DNS Family Protection combines the functions of AdGuard DNS with Safe search and adult content blocking. DNS servers by different DNS providers may also work faster or slower depending on your location, ISP, and other factors. Choose the one that works best for you. You can find out more about DNS and its characteristics.

Theme

You can set your app theme to System, Dark, or Light (available in iOS 13 or later).

Advanced settings

In Advanced settings, you can find 4 sections — Operating mode, Logging level, Export logs and system info, and Diagnostic info.

Operating mode

AdGuard VPN for iOS can operate in two modes: VPN and Integrated.

The VPN mode uses the AdGuard VPN protocol, which provides the best combination of speed and security. In this mode, AdGuard VPN will not work with AdGuard Ad Blocker for iOS.

In Integrated mode, AdGuard VPN will be able to work simultaneously with AdGuard Ad Blocker for iOS using the IPSec protocol. This protocol is also secure, but a bit slower and easier to detect. You don’t have to do anything to set up the integration: just install both apps and switch to this mode.

note

In Integrated mode, you can’t use the Exclusions feature or choose a DNS server.

Logging level

This setting is primarily used for debugging and troubleshooting purposes. The Extended and Extreme logging levels record more detailed information that can help identify and fix various problems or bugs.

caution

It is not recommended to enable the Extended or Extreme logging level unless requested by our support team.

Export logs ans system info

This option can be used to send the app’s logs and system info to our support or anyone else.

Dignostic data

This option lets you export technical information that can be useful in solving problems and is sometimes requested by our support and developers.

Send technical and intercation data

By turning this option on you are helping us understand better how users interact with the app. We use that information to improve user experience.

Kill Switch

If for some reason your VPN connection suddenly drops, Kill Switch will automatically terminate the Internet connection, making sure your data doesn’t leak and your identity stays hidden.

Quick actions

Quick actions are the convenient way to do useful or any app-specific actions from the Home screen without opening an app.

To access the quick actions menu, tap and hold the AdGuard VPN app icon, then lift your finger. In the opened menu, you will see AdGuard VPN’s quick actions: Connect (Disconnect) and Select location. You can also access all default actions like removing the app or moving or sharing the app.

Support

The Support screen (SettingsSupport) has a number of helpful features: FAQ, Report a bug, Request a feature, and Rate app. The latter allows you to rate AdGuard VPN for iOS on the App Store.

Usage issues with subscriptions purchased via the App Store

Some users can’t use their AdGuard VPN subscription purchased through the App Store. This issue may occur in two cases:

  • if you use a different account for App Store purchases
  • or if you have hidden your email address from app developers

To solve this problem, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to iOS Settings → [your Apple ID name]Media & PurchasesView Account.
  2. Make sure that the email address matches the one you use for your Apple ID.
  3. If the email addresses do not match, please email to support@adguard.com: describe your problem and provide us with the address used for the App Store.
  4. If the email addresses match, navigate to Apple IDiCloudHide My Email, find our app in the list, copy the email address, and send it to support@adguard.com along with a description of your problem. Usually, such an email address ends with @privaterelay.appleid.com or @icloud.com.

Once the support team has the email address you used for the purchase, they’ll transfer your subscription to the correct account and you’ll be able to start using it. They also may ask for additional information to verify that it’s you. You can provide the support team with your Apple purchase receipt to help speed up the process.

How to use Hide My Email

Apple’s Hide My Email feature is a great tool to keep your real email address private when signing up for websites and apps that use Apple ID. You can even use it for private correspondence and manage all incoming messages just as you would with a regular email account. This way, you can protect your privacy and keep your real email address hidden from prying eyes.

note

The feature is only available for iOS 15 and higher and requires an iCloud+ subscription.

To use this feature, go to Settings[Your Apple ID name]iCloudHide My Email, tap + Create new address and follow the on-screen instructions.

You can generate a unique and random email address that forwards incoming messages to your actual address. It might look like this: chimney.floture_0s@privaterelay.appleid.com. There is no upper limit to the number of email addresses you can create. You can categorize them with labels and use each one for different purposes: signing up, receiving newsletters, etc. Apple ensures that the content of messages handled through the Hide My Email service is not inspected beyond standard spam filtering.

The Hide My Email feature is also available in Apple’s Mail app. To send an email without disclosing your real email address, simply select Hide My Email in the From field when composing your message.

The Email Protection service by DuckDuckGo works similarly. You get an @duck.com email address and can create email aliases for sign-ups and newsletters. If these aliases begin to attract too much spam, they can be easily discarded.

Features overview

AdGuard VPN for Mac is a desktop VPN service. AdGuard VPN is fully compatible with AdGuard Ad Blocker, they can be used together and will operate seamlessly. Let’s see what features it has to offer.

Note that you can't use AdGuard VPN for Mac unless you have logged into your AdGuard account. You can either sign in with your AdGuard account or with an external account, namely, via Apple, Google or Facebook. Make sure that your external account is bound to the same e-mail address as your AdGuard account. If there is a suitable subscription in your AdGuard account, it will be automatically activated on the desktop app. Still don't have an AdGuard account? Create it here.

Compatibility

AdGuard VPN for Mac is currently supported on macOS versions starting from macOS Catalina (10.15).

Home screen

Home screen

The first tab is the Home screen. Here you can see the current status of AdGuard VPN, the selected location (if enabled) and its ping. Ping is the response time of a VPN server. The lower the number, the faster the connection. If VPN is disabled, the last location you connected to is displayed at the bottom.

The fastest locations with the lowest pings are displayed in the upper right corner of the screen. There is also a refresh button that you can click if any locations are offline. Below you can see the full list of locations. The search field makes it easy to find the location you need.

note

Free users can connect only to certain locations, while others are blocked. Besides, there is a 3 GB monthly traffic limit in the free version.

Exclusions

Exclusions

AdGuard VPN has several features that make it unique, and one of them is definitely Exclusions. By default, AdGuard VPN will run on all websites and in all apps but the ones from the exclusions list. But you can switch to the other mode, so AdGuard VPN will run only on websites and in apps from the exclusions list.

Exclusions screen

Also you can not only add websites to Exclusions but also choose among the lists of popular services. The lists are divided into eight categories: Social networks, Messengers, Video and Music streaming services, Games, Shopping, Search engines, and Work communication tools. Any of these services can be added to Exclusions in one click! It's especially convenient if you use Selective mode.

Exclusion list can be easily configured. If you've added a domain and some of its subdomains, they'll be grouped inside the root one. When adding a root domain (example.com) its mask is added too (*.example.com).

If you've added a service, changed or removed something and now want to recover initial settings, just press Reset to default next to the domain — this action will restore any missing domains and tick all checkboxes.

What’s more, ready-made exclusions lists can be transferred to other devices with installed AdGuard VPN. To export exclusions, follow the four-step instruction below:

  1. Open AdGuard VPN on the device from where you want to export your lists of exclusions. Find the appropriate section and click the Export button. The exclusions.zip archive will be downloaded.
  2. There are two .txt files inside the archive, each for General and Selective lists. Add more exclusions to them, delete the existing ones, rename files (but more on this later), or just leave the archive with files as it is.
  3. When transferring between different devices, don't forget to send the .zip file to the device for import. For example, if you import exclusion lists from your Mac to your iPhone, make sure to send the .zip file to your phone beforehand.
  4. Open AdGuard VPN on the device/in the browser where you want to import the archive with the ready lists of exclusions. Find the appropriate section, click the Import button and select the archive. Done!
note

Archive files from other devices can be similarly imported to your AdGuard VPN for Mac.

Stats

Statistics screen

The Stats screen provides detailed information about traffic consumed by location and app, most used locations and apps. View data for the day, month, or the entire time AdGuard VPN for Mac has been in use.

Importantly, all data is stored locally on your device, so no one but you has access to it. The Statistics feature is available to users with an AdGuard VPN subscription.

Support

Support screen

The fourth tab is the Support screen. Find answers to any questions in the FAQ or in the Knowledge base sections, report a bug if you encounter one, or discuss AdGuard on any of the platforms. And feel free to leave feedback about our product, we’d appreciate it.

Settings

Settings

Finally, we come to the Settings tab. In the About program section you can see the current version of AdGuard VPN, check for updates, visit our official website, and get acquainted with AdGuard's EULA and Privacy policy. In the About license section you can upgrade from free to unlimited, manage your subscription, or log out. And most importantly, from here you can access General settings.

App settings

App settings

The first four basic features make the application more convenient and user-friendly, i.e. Kill Switch, Auto-update, Launch AdGuard VPN at login, and Auto-connect on app launch. What’s more, you can choose between light, dark, and system themes — the latter one matches the theme on your Mac.

You can also allow AdGuard VPN to gather and send anonymous crash reports, technical and interaction data in order to help us improve our app. Last but not least, you can export logs from your Mac. This can be useful if you want to attach logs to your message to support.

DNS servers

DNS servers

Here you can set up a DNS server (or servers). This is useful if you don't want to rely on the default DNS server provided by your ISP. Select one from the list of popular DNS services or add a custom server manually. We recommend adding AdGuard DNS, which not only encrypts your DNS traffic, but also identifies requests to malicious websites and redirects them to a “black hole”.

Advanced settings

Advanced settings

Logging level

There are only two logging levels but we strongly recommend that you use the first, default one. The second option (extended logging) should be set only to record a strange program behavior after consulting our technical support. If you have enabled the extended logging level, make sure to switch to the default one after recording logs.

Hide menu bar icon

Although this option is located in Advanced settings, it can be enabled without hesitation. You can hide the AdGuard VPN icon from the menu bar, it won’t prevent our app from running in the background.

Use QUIC

QUIC communication protocol is the latest, cutting-edge version of HTTP. Toggle the switch to get a better connection quality in less-than-ideal conditions, while using mobile data in the subway or elevator, for instance.

  • Masks your IP address. Your true IP address is the key to your personal data for cybercriminals. Your name, email address, phone number, credit card information can all fall into the hands of fraudsters if you don't hide your IP. With AdGuard VPN, all your traffic goes through an encrypted tunnel and comes to the VPN server. The web server registers the IP address of the endpoint of the tunnel, i.e. the VPN server, and not the device's real IP address.

  • Hides your real location. What does this give you? For example, the ability to book a hotel at locals' rates or hide from geotargeted advertising.

AdGuard VPN for Windows has many advantages, so we've dedicated a separate article to them. Here, however, we want to focus more on the application itself and how it works.

How to start using AdGuard VPN for Windows

To start using AdGuard VPN for Windows, download the app from our website. The installation takes no more than a minute — and you'll see a dialog window where you'll need to check at least one box applying the terms of the User Agreement and the Privacy policy. And it's up to you to decide whether you want AdGuard to collect anonymous data about your app usage. At last the program will ask you to sign in, either via AdGuard account or via social networks (Apple, Google, Facebook). That's all, you can now use AdGuard VPN for Windows.

Home screen

AdGuard VPN for Windows homepage *border

The most noticeable item on the Home screen is the AdGuard VPN Connect/Disconnect button, below which you can see the selected server. On the right side of the screen you will see a list of available locations. The fastest location, i.e. the one with the lowest ping, is shown at the top of the list. There is also a refresh button that you can click if any locations are offline.

At the top of the screen there is a navigation panel with five tabs: Home, Exclusions, Stats. Support, and Settings.

Exclusions

By default, AdGuard VPN for WIndows works everywhere. You can add websites and apps you want to exclude from the VPN tunnel to the list of exclusions. Or, you can make AdGuard VPN work only on the websites and apps specified in the list of exclusions. Please note that these two lists are independent of each other.

Exclusions *border

You can add websites to exclusions manually by entering their domain names. The app also offers you an option to choose popular websites from the list.

Add Exclusions from list *border

note

When adding domains manually, you should take into account some nuances. For example, if you manually exclude the domain google.com, all the subdomains *.google.com will also be added to the exclusions list. However, domain names with other top-level domains such as google.es or google.it will not be excluded. Or you can add youtube.com to the exclusions, but the domain of the same service youtu.be will not be included in the list.

We recommend using the From the list option. Websites are grouped into eight categories: Social networks, Messengers, Video and Music streaming services, Games, Shopping, Search engines, and Work communication tools. We have placed the most popular services there, including all domain names and subdomains related to each platform.

Import/export exclusion lists

To export the list of exclusions from AdGuard VPN for Windows to your computer, click Export exclusions, select the folder where the list will be stored and click Save. An archive exclusions.zip with two .txt files will be downloaded, one for each of the lists. You can edit them by adding new exclusions or deleting old ones.

On the destination device, open AdGuard VPN, click Exclusions, and select Websites or Apps. Click Import exclusions and select the received archive.

Stats

Statistics screen *border

The Statistics screen shows detailed information about your data usage, categorized by both location and app. It highlights your most frequently used locations and applications. You can access statistics for different time periods: daily, monthly, or for the entire time you have been using AdGuard VPN for Windows.

Crucially, all this information is stored exclusively on your device, ensuring that only you can view it. Access to the statistics feature is available only to AdGuard VPN subscribers.

Settings

Settings *border

The fourth tab contains sections that will help you customize the app.

App settings

App settings *border

In the App settings section, you can set the app language and also enable Kill Switch, which will block access to the Internet if your VPN connection drops. This is needed to prevent intruders from getting to your data if you find yourself without VPN protection while connected to a public Wi-Fi or mobile network.

You can also activate the following features with a single click: Auto-update, Launch AdGuard VPN at Windows startup, Auto-connect on app launch, and allow AdGuard to collect anonymous app usage data so that the AdGuard team gets the info on potential usability issues. Here you can also change the theme to Light, System, or Dark.

At the bottom of the page there are two sections: DNS servers and Advanced settings.

DNS servers

The DNS servers tab allows you to add your own DNS server — manually or from the list. You can set up a DNS server by any provider. We recommend adding AdGuard DNS, a server that can protect against advertising, tracking, and phishing, in addition to the standard functions.

Advanced settings

It is entirely possible to use AdGuard VPN for Windows without ever touching the Advanced settings, but they can be useful if you're willing to take time to learn what they do.

Operating mode

Despite the fact that there are two operating modes — VPN and SOCKS5 — we advise you to use only the one chosen by default (VPN). When the VPN mode is enabled, all the traffic of your device will be directed via AdGuard VPN, while in SOCKS5 mode AdGuard VPN uses a local proxy server which can be used by other applications to redirect their traffic.

Logging level

Two levels of logging are available to choose from: Record by default and Record everything. The first option is enabled by default. The Record everything option should only be activated if our support team has asked you to do so. Using the app in this mode for an extended period of time result in increased battery consumption.

All logs are stored locally on your device, and you can send them to the support team if needed.

Use QUIC

This is an experimental feature that enables AdGuard to use the advanced QUIC encryption protocol. It has many advantages, but the most notable one is that it can improve connection quality under non-ideal conditions, for example, when using mobile Internet or when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks.

Use WinTun

Use WinTun *border

WinTun is a traffic routing driver commonly used for VPN implementations on Windows that improves the quality of VPN connections by creating a virtual network adapter. By default AdGuard VPN uses the regular WFP driver (and TDI driver for Windows 7).

Subnet exclusions

This feature allows you to add subnets to exclude traffic from specific devices connected to your network. For example, your robot vacuum cleaner.

Common installer errors

This article outlines some of the most common errors you may encounter while installing AdGuard VPN for Windows and possible ways to resolve them.

Error 5: Access Denied

This error message appears if required permissions are not granted. There may be several different reasons why AdGuard VPN installer does not have the permissions it requires to properly finish the installation process. You can try the following steps:

  • Temporarily disable your antiviruses. Some of them may interfere with the installation, depending on the restrictiveness of their settings.

  • Choose a different installation folder. It is possible that the current installation folder has some access restrictions. Also make sure you don't select an external drive, a virtual drive, etc.

  • Reboot your computer. Sometimes the permission issues are temporary and can be solved by restarting the PC.

Error 112: Disk is full, Error 1632: Temporary folder full or inaccessible

These are two different errors with very similar solutions. As their names suggest, AdGuard VPN installer didn't find enough disk space to complete the installation. There are several things you can attempt to fix the problem:

  • Uninstall some programs or delete unnecessary files from the drive you were trying to install AdGuard VPN to.

  • Download, install, and run AdwCleaner, a free piece of software by Malwarebytes. It will, among other things, clean your system from all kinds of extra "leftover" files that remain after incorrectly uninstalled programs and such. It will help clean up some disk space.

  • Reboot your computer. Sometimes temporary files can take up a considerable amount of disk space, and restarting your PC is the most reliable way to get rid of them.

Error 1601: Windows Installer is not accessible

You could say this is a particular subtype of Error 1603. The possible solutions are similar:

  • Start and re-register Microsoft Installer service. It requires some work.

    1. Press Win + R and enter services.msc.
    2. Find in the list and double click Windows Installer.
    3. Hit Start button under Service status and hit OK. If the service status is running, you should click Stop first and then hit Start.
    4. Press Win + R, type and enter msiexec /unregister and hit Enter.
    5. Press Win + R again, type and enter msiexec /regserver and hit Enter
  • Reboot the PC and start the installation all over again. Sometimes that's enough to fix the problem.

Error 1602: Canceled by user

If you got this error code, chances are you have interrupted the installation process manually in one way or another. What you can do is:

  • Do not close the installer window. When the installation is complete, it will close automatically.

  • If a dialogue window pops up during the installation, hit "Yes" to grant the installer the required permissions. Clicking "No" will cancel the installation.

  • Do not start other processes while the installation is in progress.

Error 1603: Fatal error during installation

This error sounds more worrying than it actually is. In reality, this is a rather generic error that can have many different causes, and some of them are easily fixed. Try the following solutions:

  • Press the Win key, search for Command Prompt, and run it. There, type in sfc /scannow and press Enter.

  • Choose a different installation folder. It is possible that the current installation folder has some access restrictions. Also make sure you don't select an external drive, a virtual drive, etc.

  • Uninstall AdGuard VPN using our special uninstall tool and then repeat the installation.

  • Acquire full permissions on the drive for installation. It is possible that the error 1603 occurs because you don’t have full permissions on the file location. It's also not as easy as some of the other solutions:

    1. Open File Explorer, right-click the drive containing the installation location, and select Properties.
    2. Go to Security tab and click Edit.
    3. Single-click SYSTEM and ensure that the Allow box of every item in Permissions for SYSTEM is checked (if it is checkable). Do the same check for Administrators.
    4. Click OK to go back to Properties dialog. Then click Advanced.
    5. Click Change Permissions.
    6. In Permissions tab, double-click Administrators.
    7. Select This folder, subfolders and files for the Applies to field and tick all the available Basic permissions. After that hit OK.
    8. Do the same operation above (from item 7) for SYSTEM.
    9. Click OK all the way out. Try installing AdGuard again.

Error 1618: Another installation is already in progress

This error appears when trying to run multiple instances of the AdGuard VPN installer simultaneously. What to do if you get this error:

  • Reboot your PC and start the installer again. When you restart the computer, all ongoing processes will stop, including all copies of the installer.

  • Don't click multiple times on the installer, even if it doesn't start right away. Sometimes it may take a few seconds to display the installer UI.

Error 1638: Another version of this product is already installed

It's very likely that you've already installed AdGuard VPN before.

  • Check if AdGuard VPN is already installed on your computer. To do that, press the Win key and start typing adguard vpn.

  • Maybe there are some leftover files from a previous AdGuard VPN installation. Uninstall AdGuard using our special uninstall tool and then repeat the installation.

Other errors

If you have encountered an error that's not listed above, it is possible that we can solve it by ourselves. But in order to do that, we need log files from you. Please perform the following steps:

  • Find and archive AdGuard VPN installation logs in the same way that is described in this article.

  • Find and save to disk the Event Viewer logs. This article explains how to do that.

Please email all these files from the two previous steps at support@adguard.com and describe the problem in the message body. Our support team will reply to you as soon as possible.

How to collect and send logs

If you encounter any problems while using AdGuard VPN for Windows, you can inform us about it. We would appreciate it if you also send application logs, as they help us resolve issues much quicker.

Collecting and sending standard logs

By default, AdGuard VPN for Windows uses the standard logging level, that is, the basic collection of data about running processes of the app. To send these logs, follow the next steps:

  1. Open AdGuard VPN for Windows and, if possible, repeat the actions that led to the error. Note the exact time when this error occurred.

  2. Click Support (in the menu above) → Report a bug.

  3. In the opened form, enter your email address for feedback and describe the error found, including the time when this error occurred. If you can't reproduce the problem, specify as accurately as possible when it last occurred.

  4. There is a check mark next to the Send detailed system info, which means that when you send a report, you also send logs.

If for some reason it is more convenient for you to send us logs in another way, you can export them yourself. To do this, go to SupportExport logs and system info.

Collecting and sending extended logs

In most cases, the default logging level is sufficient to trace down possible bugs. But there are cases when more detailed technical information about the device and connections is required, and then our support team will ask you to enable the extended logging level. To send this type of logs, follow these steps:

  1. Open AdGuard VPN for Windows and select Settings (in the menu above) → App settingsAdvanced settingsLogging level.

  2. In the Logging level section, select Record everything.

  3. Repeat the actions that led to the error, and note the time when it occurred.

  4. Switch the logging level back to Record by default.

  5. Then select Support (in the menu above) → Report a bug.

  6. In the opened form, enter your email address for feedback and describe the error found, including the time when this error occurred.

  7. Make sure that there is a check mark next to Send detailed system info and click Send.

If for some reason it is more convenient for you to send us logs in another way, you can export them yourself. To do this, go to SupportExport logs and system info.

What type of encryption is used in AdGuard VPN

Introduction

Encryption is the reason the word "private" exists in the term "Virtual Private Network". A VPN creates a tunnel between your device and a VPN server, passing through which your data is encrypted and then securely transmitted to the open Internet. The process of encryption, i.e. turning data into gibberish that no one who intercepts it can read, is essential to any VPN service.

The AdGuard VPN protocol uses the most secure and fast encryption algorithm to date — AES-256. Learn what it is and why it is so good.

AES historical tour

AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption was developed in the late 20th century at the U.S. government request: the existing Data Encryption Standard (DES) became obsolete and a new, more secure encryption algorithm was required.

In a public competition announced by the government won the Rijndael cipher — rather similar to DES but much more sophisticated. In 2002 it was renamed AES and published by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Today, AES is the industry standard for encryption. Because of its open nature, it is used by the NSA and government agencies, as well as private, commercial, and non-profit organizations.

How AES-256 works

AES is a block cipher with a symmetric key. As a symmetric-key cipher, it requires only one secret key to encrypt and decrypt the data. As a block cipher, AES divides the unencrypted information, which is called plaintext, into blocks, splits the original cryptographic key into several ones and applies them to each block. In the end, a ciphertext, i.e. an encrypted text, is obtained.

There are different key sizes — 128, 192 and 256 bits — and the blocks are also measured in bits. During the encryption process, the encryptor replaces each piece of information with another, depending on the security key. So, for example, AES-256 creates 256 blocks of ciphertext from 256 blocks of plaintext in 14 rounds.

The rounds consist of several steps: splitting the data into blocks, swapping bytes, shifting rows and rearranging columns. The result is a completely random set of characters that will only make sense when using the right encryption key.

AES-256 is the strongest level of encryption: to break this cipher, 2256 discrete combinations, each consisting of 78 digits, would have to be tried.

How the AdGuard VPN protocol works

Our protocol is used by all AdGuard VPN mobile and desktop applications. Download any of our products and use it knowing that your data is protected in the most secure way.

Why we developed the AdGuard VPN protocol

For years, we were concentrating on developing all flavors of ad blocking apps and browser extensions. And in 2019 we resolved to develop our own VPN service, seemingly out of nowhere. When, in reality, there were a few reasons that prompted us to do so.

  • AdGuard mobile apps had compatibility issues with VPN apps. Normally, two VPN-based mobile apps can't work together: in rare cases on iOS, and never on Android. As AdGuard Ad Blocker apps use local VPN to filter network traffic, using them alongside any VPN app would be out of the question. That's why we saw the development of an in-house VPN as the only feasible solution that could guarantee compatibility: after we apply some magic, the two apps are able to work together as one VPN service.
  • Secondly, VPN seemed more than relevant to our philosophy and priorities. Our primary goal is to protect users' privacy, and this is exactly what VPNs are for.
  • Finally, over the years of developing AdGuard software, we have become experts in filtering network traffic. This allowed us to bring in something new instead of becoming another wishy-washy VPN.

From the outset, we decided that AdGuard VPN would have one key difference from its competitors — we shall develop and deploy an in-house VPN protocol which would not force users to choose between security and speed.

We developed the AdGuard VPN protocol seeing the disadvantages of popular VPN protocols (OpenVPN, WireGuard, IPSec, etc.):

  • They can be easily detected and blocked on the network level.
  • If you try to "conceal" them, the performance will drop.

To "conceal" the use of VPN, the data flow is often "wrapped" in a TCP connection, and sometimes it's additionally encrypted to make the traffic appear like normal website communication. Unfortunately, this approach has a disadvantage — due to the use of TCP, there is a need for additional confirmation of delivery.

protocol 6

Using any popular VPN protocol, we are always facing a trade-off: fast but easy to detect vs. slow.

What's great about the AdGuard VPN protocol

protocol 5
  • It's nearly impossible to distinguish from normal HTTPS traffic, that is, the connection to the AdGuard VPN server looks exactly the same as the connection to a normal website.
  • For encryption we use HTTPS (TLS), which copes with this task perfectly. It is the most popular encryption method in the world, and the libraries that implement it are constantly audited for security.

Some existing VPN protocols also handle the encryption task, and they (and thus, the fact of using a VPN) are hard to detect. But this usually comes at the price of reduced speed. This doesn't happen in our case, thanks to several solutions.

  • We use the HTTP/2 transport protocol, which makes it virtually impossible to detect the AdGuard VPN protocol while maintaining high speed.
  • Unlike others, the AdGuard VPN protocol operates with data and not with packets. This means that AdGuard VPN establishes a separate "tunnel" for each connection, each HTTP/2 stream corresponds to one connection. AdGuard VPN transfers data through this tunnel. This allows us to speed up the operation by saving on confirmation packets, because we can buffer the data of several packets into one before sending it to the VPN server (or from the server to the client). And the fewer packets, the fewer confirmations are needed.

What is a DNS leak

Once you install a VPN, you want to be sure that there won't be any leaks that will lead to your de-anonymization. AdGuard VPN reliably protects your traffic and your data from prying eyes. Nevertheless, in some cases you may suspect the presence of DNS leaks in our VPN service. We'll explain where these concerns come from and why they are unfounded.

What are DNS leaks?

When you use a VPN, a connection to a DNS server may travel outside of the encrypted VPN tunnel and your traffic may become visible to the ISP.

In other words, every time you open a website, your browser sends a request to the ISP's DNS server and in return receives the IP address of the requested website. In this way, your ISP sees all your online activity and can track you.

How to detect DNS leaks

There are all sorts of anonymity check services for detecting DNS leaks, such as whoer.net. The algorithms of these websites are not clear, but their intentions are — to scare users with imaginary leaks, potentially enabling them to sell their services.

Some security scanning websites consider the coincidence of the user's IP address and the DNS server's IP address to be a "good" result, indicating that there are no leaks. In reality, such a match may indicate the use of a VPN. When VPN is disabled and the requests go to your ISP's DNS server, the IP address of the DNS server and your own one do not coincide.

Why there are no DNS leaks in AdGuard VPN

If you enable AdGuard VPN on your device and run a check on any of the scanner websites, it finds that DNS queries go to the AdGuard DNS servers. However, this cannot be considered a leak.

Using a non-filtering AdGuard DNS server is set by default in AdGuard VPN. This ensures that your queries do not go to the DNS servers of your ISP, which means that you stay private and anonymous online.

What's more, AdGuard DNS is a very popular DNS service, used by over 50 million people. What does this mean for you? Imagine the following situation: the usual VPN service uses the DNS server which is located at the same IP address as the VPN server. The number of its users hardly exceeds 1,000.

And in the case of AdGuard DNS you will "merge" with 50 million users so nobody will be able to track you by the mere fact of using that DNS server.

How to set up a custom DNS server in AdGuard VPN

There are many popular public DNS servers from well-known DNS providers. Some of them can only perform their direct duties — giving the IP addresses of the requested domains, and some can do more.

For example, AdGuard DNS removes ads and protects your device from being tracked, and AdGuard DNS Family Protection combines AdGuard DNS features with Safe search and Parental control.

You can select any DNS server and configure it in AdGuard VPN:

  • in AdGuard VPN for Windows: SettingsApp settingsDNS servers
  • in AdGuard VPN for Mac: SettingsApp settingsDNS servers
  • in AdGuard VPN for Android: Settings (gear icon) → App settingsDNS server
  • in AdGuard VPN for iOS: Settings (gear icon) → App settingsDNS server

  • 20 Mbit/sec speed limit
  • Only some of the server locations are available
  • Email clients can’t be used for sending messages (on iOS and Android)
note

The last point should be addressed separately: free users of AdGuard VPN for iOS and Android cannot send emails in email clients. It’s impossible because we block port 25, which is used for outgoing emails, and thus reinsure against spam. However, sending emails with web email services works perfectly well. And on AdGuard VPN for Android you can add apps to exclusions so that email apps will function as well.

At the same time you can purchase a subscription to get an unlimited version of the app. A subscription allows to have more benefits in comparison with a free account:

  • 10 simultaneously connected devices
  • Unlimited traffic
  • No speed cap
  • All 50+ locations are available
  • Secure streaming
  • No port 25 block

To use all the advantages, consider purchasing a subscription.

How VPN works

To understand how AdGuard VPN works, you should at first understand the general principles of the VPN service.

VPN features

A VPN is a virtual private network that helps hide your location and protect your data on the Web. A VPN connects a computer or a mobile device to a VPN server and uses the IP address of this server to make it seem to an outside observer that you are in another place. This allows you to securely access various Internet resources and protect your personal data.

In that way, a VPN performs two important functions:

  1. Maintaining anonymity

Using an Internet connection, the user leaves their digital footprint, which can then be analyzed and used by third parties. For example, one of the online stores that you have visited can save your search history and then offer you their products based on it through targeted advertising. Or the secret services, having learned your location through the IP address of your device and having determined your identity, can secretly monitor your activity on the web. In addition, web browsers and ISPs themselves can use your browsing history for their own purposes, as well as sell it to advertisers and provide it to government institutions. VPN allows you to hide your IP address and replace it with the IP address of the VPN server to which you are connected. This way you will be able to maintain your privacy and anonymously search for information on the web.

  2. Data protection

If you connect to an unreliable or public network, the data on your device may become vulnerable to cybercriminals. Bank card details, usernames and passwords, passport data — all this data can be intercepted by online fraudsters. The VPN tunnel encrypts the information you send to and receive from the Web, making it useless in the wrong hands.

VPN structure

When you connect to a network, your computer or mobile device is assigned a unique ID number, or IP address. It usually consists of numbers from 0 to 255, separated by dots or colons. Knowing this sequence, one can determine the geolocation of the device. The IP address is usually assigned by your ISP, and it will be visible all the way to the desired resource. For this reason, the web server of the site you are visiting can register your IP address and record what you have requested. This record can then be used primarily for data collection and traffic analysis.

A VPN creates a tunnel between your device and the VPN server. Your data goes through this tunnel, gets encrypted and then enters the open Internet in a secure form. The web server therefore registers the IP address of the endpoint of the tunnel, meaning the VPN server, and thus not the device's real IP address. Thus, the site that you get to after passing through the VPN tunnel will consider the geolocation of the VPN server you selected as your real location. And the encrypted data will not fall into the hands of advertisers, hackers and security services.

VPN structure

Types of VPN protocols

VPN security protocols are tools that encrypt data in a VPN tunnel and allow you to maintain user privacy in the open Internet. At the moment, the vast majority of modern VPN services use one of the following three VPN protocols:

  1. IPSec. One of its main advantages is that it is available on most devices and operating systems and provides a high level of security. However, the use of double encapsulation in this protocol may result in a lower connection speed.

  2. OpenVPN. This modern protocol is open source, so third-party manufacturers can improve and update the technology.

  3. WireGuard. Its main advantages are ease of use, high efficiency and low vulnerability to attacks.

In addition to these VPN protocols, there are others (for example, TLS, SSTP, IKEv2), but they are unpopular or do not meet modern data encryption standards.

protocol 5

AdGuard VPN also has its own protocol. One of its advantages is that the traffic transmitted using the AdGuard VPN protocol is difficult to distinguish from the regular traffic. The VPN tunnel looks like normal HTTPS traffic, so it is extremely difficult to detect and block it. In addition, it is based on the mechanisms of the modern HTTP/2 protocol, which ensures high connection speed.

protocol 6

VPN drawbacks

Despite the obvious advantages, VPN is not perfect and has some disadvantages:

Lower speed

Since your traffic does not go directly to the web server, but first passes through the VPN server, the speed of the VPN connection decreases. Other factors also affect the speed when using a VPN: the load of the VPN server, its bandwidth, the compatibility of the VPN protocol with your operating system. All these factors, as well as the speed of the network itself, may impact the overall user experience of a VPN connection.

Access blocking

Some online services make a lot of effort to detect VPN traffic and block access to VPN users. However, not many VPNs can mask themselves in such a way that they are only seen as regular traffic. Therefore, many attempts to go to a particular website without disabling VPN end up in nothing.

VPN connections breaking

A weak signal, network overload, VPN incompatibility with a firewall, antivirus and other programs, an outdated VPN protocol — all this can cause a sudden failure in the VPN connection, especially with unreliable VPN providers.

AdGuard VPN

Our VPN service has several important advantages:

  • Proprietary VPN protocol, which works stably even with a slow Internet connection and disguises itself as normal traffic, making it more difficult to track and block it

  • No-logging policy, which means that AdGuard VPN does not collect your personal data and does not transfer it to third parties

  • More than 50 VPN servers in dozens of countries

  • Ease of use and extensive customization options

  • With AdGuard VPN on your router, neither your VPN provider nor anyone else has access to your Internet activity
  • Installing AdGuard VPN on your router secures your entire network, meaning that all devices connected to it are protected
  • You can enhance security and protect your data on devices where it's not possible to install AdGuard VPN apps — smart TVs (currently, AdGuard VPN is only available on Android TV) and game consoles

Why AdGuard VPN is the better option

When getting ready to commit to a long-term VPN subscription, users most frequently evaluate its speed, security, and price. Those are very important points but there is so much more! AdGuard VPN has a dozen of key assets that make it 'the better option'.

To start with, let’s go over AdGuard VPN’s unmatched features that you won’t find in any other VPN.

1. Proprietary protocol

From the very outset, we resolved to develop and deploy an in-house VPN protocol instead of picking a canned solution — that’d be too easy, plus, we weren’t satisfied with existing protocols. The result has become the AdGuard VPN protocol.

Choosing a VPN service, people often face a trade-off between fast vs. safe. The AdGuard VPN protocol is a perfect blend of speed and security, so you don’t have to bear slow Internet connection or make privacy sacrifices. Among other things, it disguises itself as regular traffic and it’s much harder to detect and block it.

2. Website and app exclusions

There are situations where you don't need your VPN to be active: for instance, when you're ordering food or using maps. For this reason, AdGuard VPN has a special feature: Exclusions.

Exclusions

You can activate AdGuard VPN selectively — only for certain websites or apps. This option is for those who use a VPN service only in specific situations: to enter a blocked website, use an app or watch a TV show that's not available in their country, or not to expose their data when visiting some websites. Turning a VPN on selectively also helps save VPN traffic.

If you prefer absolute anonymity in most cases, you can activate AdGuard VPN everywhere except for the excluded websites or apps. Just add your food delivery apps and utility payment websites to Exclusions — for them, VPN will be off.

3. Block ads and trackers with a DNS server

Relying on the DNS server provided by your ISP by default is not safe: your ISP most likely has access to your browsing history. With the AdGuard VPN app, you can choose a secure and encrypted DNS server from known DNS providers, such as AdGuard DNS, Cisco, Cloudflare, Google, or Quad9, or even add your own DNS server.

We recommend using an AdGuard DNS server: it blocks ads and trackers and protects your device from malware.

DNS servers

4. Fastest locations

VPN server locations

Another feature that makes AdGuard VPN stand out from the crowd is that you can select a location based on its ping. In a nutshell, ping is the time it takes the data packet sent from your device to reach the server and return. When in doubt, use a rule of thumb: the lower the ping, the closer the server, the higher its speed. We are constantly expanding the number of locations so that you can choose from a variety.

note

To access all VPN server locations, you need to purchase an AdGuard VPN subscription.

5. Integration with AdGuard Ad Blocker

With desktop apps and web browser extensions, there are rarely conflicts between apps, except for antiviruses and other similar types of software.

With mobile devices, hovewer, it’s not that simple. In the vast majority of cases, two VPN-based apps will not work together. Both in Android and iOS, there are limitations that prevent it.

Integrated mode

However, we managed to find a solution to befriend AdGuard VPN and AdGuard Ad Blocker. When you have both AdGuard apps installed on one device, they will automatically become compatible without any input required from you. This is a unique opportunity to take advantage of two sets of features, which you would normally have to choose between.

6. QUIC support

QUIC is a cutting-edge protocol that has many perks. The main advantage is it can improve the connection quality in non-ideal conditions — for example, on mobile devices or when connecting to public Wi-Fi. Although the new protocol won’t affect speed when the connection is fine and stable, it will definitely make the situation better for users with slow Internet.

caution

The QUIC protocol is rather new and may be unstable. We cannot guarantee its complete reliability for every case.

Now let’s switch to the item set that any decent VPN can't do without.

7. Kill Switch

Kill Switch is essential if you, for instance, often use a mobile network or connect to public Wi-Fi networks in malls, cafes, on the subway or at the airport. For the simple reason that if your VPN suddenly fails and the connection becomes insecure, chances are your sensitive information will be exposed to fraudsters or cyber criminals.

If for some reason your VPN connection is interrupted, Kill Switch will automatically disconnect you from the Internet, keeping attackers away from seizing your information.

8. Auto-protection

This feature has been developed specifically for unsecured networks. If you enable Auto-protection, you won't ever forget to enable VPN when visiting public places. Should you pop into a coffee shop and connect to a local Wi-Fi network, you’ll be automatically connected to AdGuard VPN.

Compatibility

Auto-protection is available in AdGuard VPN for iOS and Android.

9. Ten simultaneous connections

With an AdGuard VPN subscription, you can connect up to ten devices simultaneously.

Some VPN providers only allow to log in to their service on ten devices max. With AdGuard VPN, it doesn't matter on how many devices you log in to your AdGuard account, but you can have ten VPN connections enabled at the same time.

Those who don’t have a subscription, can use AdGuard VPN on two devices simultaneously, which gives us another trump card to play against competitors: most free VPN services only allow you to use one device at a time.

10. Secure streaming

Streaming services don't like VPNs for obvious reasons: according to statistics, about 20% of users install a VPN mainly to watch shows, TV shows and movies bypassing geo-blocking. That's why streaming platforms tend to do everything they can to track VPN traffic and block it.

But what if you want to feel safe while watching content specific to your region? Or don't want to stop watching exciting series even when you travel to another country? The answer is simple — AdGuard VPN, which thanks to its unique protocol can remain invisible to services.

We don't endorse the use of AdGuard VPN to bypass copyright regulations.

11. Dark mode

Dark mode *mobile_border

This little feature deserves special mention. In fact, many users crave for dark mode, so we couldn’t ignore it and added a theme switch for all AdGuard VPN products. Choose the one you like more — light, dark or system default. Hope you’ll join the dark side.

AdGuard VPN Overview

What is a VPN and why do you need one?

A VPN allows you to create a secure connection to another network on the Internet.

Initially, VPNs were created to securely connect business networks over the Internet, so that people could connect to the corporate network from home. Today, this technology is used for many other things: for example, to browse the Internet anonymously or to protect your online activity from prying eyes while using public Wi-Fi.

A VPN connects a user's computer or mobile device to a server and allows one to browse the net using a "cover" IP address. Thus, third-party observers cannot see the user's real IP address, which makes it nearly impossible to trace them.

The first thing that users mention in relation to VPN is traffic encryption and the security derived from it. But what does it mean? A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between the user's device and the remote server. All your web traffic passes through this tunnel, so your data is protected along the way. For the external observer, your traffic exits the VPN server, so it looks like your device has the IP address of this server. This trick masks the user's identity and true location.

VPN can be used to:

  • Hide your real whereabouts and stay anonymous
  • Secure your data — even when connecting to a public Wi-Fi, you can browse the Web safely
  • Protect yourself from spoofing (network traffic interception) and tracking on the part of your Internet service provider

Passwords, card details, and just plain personal information are at risk when a user surfs the Internet. But if you connect to the global network using a VPN, you can be sure that no one can intercept your data.

Why AdGuard VPN?

Trusted developer

AdGuard has been present on the market of personal data protection and ad blocking and developing its line of software for more than 12 years. Over this time, our company has built an impeccable reputation, and the number of our customers has exceeded 30 million.

Unique VPN protocol

The main difference between AdGuard VPN and its competitors is that we use our own developed protocol. It disguises itself as normal traffic, so it is much more difficult to track and block it.

No-logging policy

No-logging policy means that we don’t collect, store, or transfer users’ personal data to third parties. Read AdGuard VPN Privacy policy

Tracking protection

Web traffic from any user may be of interest and is particularly valuable in terms of monetization of personal data. Both criminals and unscrupulous ISPs can access it. However, with a trustworthy VPN, you can be confident that neither your provider nor anyone else will see your internet activity.

How to take a screenshot

Screenshot is a capture of your computer’s or mobile device’s screen, which can be obtained by using standard tools or a special program/app.

Sometimes a screenshot (or screenshots) is required by support team to better understand the problem, and not everyone knows how to take screenshots, especially of a separate window or a specific screen area on their devices. If you recognize yourself as one of these users, don’t worry. This article will help you as it describes a range of ways to take screenshots on different platforms.

How to take a screenshot

Here you will find all the necessary hotkeys you should know in order to take screenshots on your computer or mobile device.

Android

Taking a screenshot on an Android device can be done in various ways — depending on the device model and its manufacturer.

Generally, you should use the following button combination for Android:

  • Press and hold both the Volume Down and the Power buttons for 1–2 seconds

Android will capture the entire screen and save it as a photo. So, you can find the screenshot in a Screenshots folder in your Gallery.

But, as it has been already said, there can be differences depending on a particular device. Let’s look at other possible combinations:

  • Hold down at once Home and Power buttons for 1–2 seconds;
  • Hold down at once the Back and the Home buttons

On Android 8 and later there is also a possibility to take a screenshot by placing your hand vertically along the left or right edge of your phone and swiping in from that edge with your hand touching the screen.

If this method doesn’t work, check SettingsAdvanced featuresMotions and gestures → enable Palm swipe to capture.

Besides, you can always use any special apps for taking screenshots on your devices, for example — Screenshot Easy, Screenshot Ultimate, Screenshot Snap, etc.

iOS

Any iOS device (barring ancient ones) lets you take a screenshot using standard tools.

To take a screenshot on an iOS device, use the following combination:

  • Press the Sleep/Wake (side) button and the Home button at the same time, then quickly release them

and this one for iPhone X or later:

  • Press the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Up button at the same time, then quickly release them

iOS will capture the entire screen and save it as a photo. You can find it in a standard Photo app.

Windows

  • To take a screenshot on a Windows device, press the PrtScn button

On some devices, you first have to press and hold Fn before pressing PrtScn.

note

PrtScn (Print Screen) can be differently abbreviated on various keyboards — PrntScrn, PrtScn, PrtScr or PrtSc.

Windows will capture the entire screen and copy it to the (invisible) clipboard.

To take a screenshot of an active window, use the following combination:

  • Hold down Alt and press PrtScn (or Fn + Alt + PrtScn on some laptops)

To take a screenshot of a specific area, you should use the following combination:

  • Hold down Win (the Windows button) and Shift and press S

After you take a screenshot, it will be saved in the clipboard. Usually, you will then be able to paste it into a document using the standard button combination Ctrl + V. Alternatively, if you need to save the screenshot into a file, you should open the standard Paint program (or any other app that can work with images). Paste your screenshot there using the same button combination or by clicking the Paste button (usually in the top left corner of the screen) and then save it.

Windows 8 and 10 let you take a screenshot very quickly with a Win + PrtScn combination. As soon as you press these buttons, the screenshot will be automatically saved as a file to your Pictures → Screenshots Folder.

There is also a dedicated program for taking screenshots called Snipping Tool that you can find via Start menu among standard programs of your computer. Snipping Tool lets you capture of any area of your desktop or the entire screen. After taking a screenshot using this program you can edit the picture and then save it.

Besides, you can also try using different apps for taking screenshots on your computer, like PicPick, Nimbus Screenshot, Screenshot Captor, Snipaste, Monosnap, etc.

macOS

To take a screenshot on a Mac device, use the following button combination:

  • Press and hold together ⌘ Cmd + Shift + 3

Mac will capture the entire screen and save it as a file on the desktop.

To take a screenshot of an active window, use the following combination:

  • Press and hold together ⌘ Cmd + Shift + 4 + Space bar. The pointer will change to a camera icon. Click the window to capture it. Press the Esc button to cancel taking a screenshot

To take a screenshot of a specific area, you should use the following combination:

  • Press and hold together ⌘ Cmd + Shift + 4. Drag the crosshair to select the needed area. Release your mouse or trackpad to take a screenshot, press the Esc button to cancel it.

To take a screenshot of the Touch Bar (MacBook Pro) use the following combination:

  • Hold down ⌘ Cmd + Shift + 6

Your Mac captures the entire Touch Bar and saves it as a file on the desktop.

To copy a screenshot to the clipboard instead of saving it, hold down Ctrl together with any of the combinations above. Then you can paste the screenshot (from the clipboard) into a document or an image you are currently editing by using Cmd + V combination.

You can also take screenshots by using Preview and choosing Take screenshot (of the selected area, window, or the entire screen). With Preview you can save your screenshots in JPG, TIFF, PDF, and other file formats.
